Elite Zebras Training Academy
Kevin Hughes
Administrative Director
Kevin Hughes is an experienced hockey official with 17 years of refereeing experience and a strong commitment to mentorship, personal development, and the officiating community. Refereeing has long been part of the Hughes family, with his father spending 40 years as an official and two of his uncles continuing to officiate well into their 60s.
Kevin began officiating in 2009 at the age of 22, learning to skate and referee at the same time after growing up without playing organized hockey. His first Hockey Canada officiating clinic was instructed by Elite Zebras founder Devin Wentzell, who recognized his potential and provided the guidance, support, and opportunities that helped shape his development as an official. Kevin’s journey represents one of the earliest success stories connected to the Elite Zebras development philosophy.
Throughout his career, Kevin has officiated at a wide range of tournaments and events across Canada and internationally. His experience includes assignments in the Arctic communities of Kugaaruk, Nunavut, and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, as well as the CARHA Hockey World Cup. He has also travelled to Riga, Latvia, to officiate in Europe. These opportunities have provided him with valuable experience working alongside officials, players, and organizers from different hockey communities and competitive environments.
Kevin’s approach both on and off the ice is centred on continuous improvement, open communication, cooperation, and accountability. He believes officials should consistently strive to become better than they were the day before while remaining open to feedback and new perspectives.
Through Elite Zebras Training Academy, Kevin is committed to sharing the knowledge and experiences he has gained throughout his career. His goal is to help officials build confidence, strengthen their skills, and contribute positively to the continued growth and development of the game.
